TN: 2001 Foillard Morgon

Jean and I managed for the first time since my birthday in early June to go out to dinner without our two-year-old in tow. We had a lovely dinner at a mom & pop French restaurant in the middle of nowhere in Indiana. With our starters of a homemade duck paté and lobster feuilleté, we shared a split of Laurent-Perrier NV Brut that was its usual dry, yeasty, crisp and subtly fruited self. Because Jean wanted lamb and I wanted fish, I ordered a seared yellowfin tuna and a bottle of the 2001 Ch. Foillard "Cote du Py" Morgon in the hopes that it would go with both.

nose: classic Gamay, rich fruit, slightly spicy with a hint of gaminess palate: medium body, good fruit, excellent structure, a bit of pencil lead, spice and a hint of tannin in the finish

Was my choice influenced by our recent discussion of Morgon? Amazingly (to this hidebound traditionalist), the Morgon went well with the tuna, though it was better with the lamb. Perfectly á point now, I'd say drink sooner rather than later. (importer: K. Lynch)
