TN: 2002 August Briggs Zinfandel, Carpineto CC Riserva

2002 August Briggs Zinfandel Very closed when first opened, 10-15 minutes in the glass revealed a very dark, almost purple wine with a very alcoholic nose. Behind the alcohol were hints of oak and raspberry, but somewhat understated for a zin. Medium mouthfeel, soft yet well balanced tannins giving way to a very long finish with excellent fruit and lingering tannins. This reminded me of some nicer oaked Cabs. Very different style of California zin than I'm used to, to say the least. Elegance over power, but with some flaws. B? I'm new at this :)

Carpineto Chianti Classico Riserva, 2002 Served with a lovely baked Cornish hen. Lovely nose with subtle oak and fruit, very well balanced on the palette with good cherry and raspberry fruit, medium finish. Medium finish, again a very well balanced CC. I haven't had many Chiantis as of yet, but this one may inspire me to try others. B+.
