TN Barerock 2003 Adelaide Hills Chardonnay

A new world Chassange Monrachet my wine guy said. Not sure about that but at $14.99US a bottle this was a keeper. Greenish yellow in the glass smells fresh nothing specific comes to mind, In the mouth very zesty big time lemon citrus with a surprising oaky aftertaste - just didn't see that coming, usually I can smell oak a mile away but there it was.

We had with trout. I would prefer the King Estate PG we has a week ago but this was good for the price.

OOPS Rockbare

A friend presented me with a bottle of this a few weeks ago. Just got around to trying it over last weekend. I found the lemon, but not the oak. Maybe because didn't have the trout. But I found it very good.

The oak was very subtle and surprising not intrusive but just back there in the audience waving for attention.

Ah, I'll take note and give it another shot. thks

Your wine guy must work at Wine Warehouse. They are sending out emails about their great prices this week on Rockbare. Some store in NJ has been selling it for $13.49 for a while now. I was hit with a pear smell at first and then peaches came in. I thought it was very clean on the palate at first with a little oak at the end. Certainly not American oak which is so common in Oz. Chassange Monrachet is a catchy sales speak but the oak on the end puts that away quickly. I doubt that I will purchase any more of their Chardonnay but I do want to try the Baby Shiraz.

I would prefer the PG also. Recently I tasted a large selection of King Family Estate wines that included the labels "NxNW" and "next:". The "next:" label had two rieslings, one from Oregon and one from Washington and I have to say that I have never had any US riesling that was as good as these. They were both classic flint/slate with a touch of diesel oil reminding me of an estate high on the hill over Bernkastel. The NxNW label had two Cabs and two Syrahs from the two states. I only tasted the Syrahs and they were excellent.

Guilty as charged!

They are sending out emails

While I have encountered a touch of oak in Montrachets before, never such a sharp citrus attack. Market speak at its best/worst.

Will look for these. Thanks

I gave it another try, with salmon, and squarely caught the oak that seemed to be hiding in the back, shuffling its feet when I tried it with paella a week or so ago.

Good call, thanks, but the lemon seemed to be more distant now. Because of the salmon (which didn't have any lemon on it) or maybe due to the bottle being opened almost 10 days before. What temp to you store this at?

Two things came together here. Fruit, lemon, fades with an open bottle even when refrigerated and oak comes out. I generally store my remains in the frig. for up to 3-4 days, with the exception of wines that I am not likely to go back to but can't bear to throw out - not a part of my normal routine. That said the remains of the Kirkland Merlot leave this afternoon for a trip through the pipes of Ponte Vedra..
