TN: Clos du Caillou CdR "Bouquet des Garrigues" 1998

This is one of the boutique bottlings of Clos du Caillou's Cotes du Rhones imported by David Hinkle of North Berkeley Imports. Opened tonight, it first impressed us as a lighter red wine with bright cherry fruit and a hint of the meatier notes of the S. Rhone. As the evening (and the bottle) progressed, it became deeper, darker and fruitier and the meaty and smoky elements became more pronounced. There were still noticeable tannins and great depth to this wine, and it bore a strong resemblence to a high quality Gigondas or CdP with perhaps a touch less depth. Overall, a very nice bottle of wine with several more years of life ahead of it.
