TN: Dr. Prum's generic "Riesling"

My wine store guy told me I had to try this. I was sceptical, why pay roughly $10 for a generic Mosel/Saar/Ruwer (Qualitaetswein predicate) when there's lots of Kabinetts around for the same price? Wasn't it just extra $$s for the posh Prum label?

The color wasn't promising either, just the barest hint of straw, with the aroma following suit. But the taste was a wonderfully simple pleasure. The honeyed lemon taste of Wehlen (but without the complexities), slightly effervescent, with the acidity perfectly balanced for a refreshing summer drink. I kept going back to it, and finished the bottle over a quick two days.

It won't win any prizes, but with its perfect balance, it handily beats most Kabinetts in this price range for a summer afternoon refresher. I guess the Prums also know how to make a cheap wine.

Thanks Jim for the notes, I had been tempted to purchase the 2001 for some time now and actually almost went for it today. I always get excited when I see the label on the shelf as it is almost Identical to illusive JJ Prum... I guess I should give it a try now.

It's always a good idea to buy the simple everyday wine from the best producers. Even the most prestigious ones (in Germany) offer a wide range of wines and the lower end, often called "Gutsriesling" (loosely "Estate Risling") in litre bottles is often very good value. Anders
