TN Guigal Hermitage Blanc 1981

Many of the classic white Hermitages can easily last well for 25 years and more - I am not certain how long some of the more recent ones will last.

This wine is light golden as better white Hermitages usually are. It has now smoothed somewhat, has a bit of oily texture, and considerable mineral and flint character. There is plenty of acid. I have never tasted a white Hermitage that is a fruit bomb. There is considerable fullness and power. This is a good wine for dishes where you want something more powerful than a top white Graves or Burgundy and without a lot of fruit character. I think this wine will hold well for several more years, but there is no reason to wait. Vintages in Hermitage often are discussed in terms of the red wine. However, just as in Burgundy and Bordeaux, the better vintage years for reds do not always produce top whites and vice versa. Top white Hermitage is not well known in many places, probably because production of it is rather small. The bottle I opened just said Hermitage on the label. You had to look at the wine to see that it was the white and not the more common red one.
