TN: Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenburg Riesling Auslese 2002 Goldkapsel

K&L had about 35 of these on sale, list for $69.99 US (down to $15.99 due to leaking) I ordered 2.

Tonight, I opened the one that was leaking (or at least the capsule was sticky, fill was good)

A beautiful gold color, with just a hint of green. Ripe peaches and cinnamon on the nose.

Honey and fruit with a hint of citrus, lemon perhaps. Sweet but balanced. Not cloying.

Label details: QmP A.P. Nr. 43790431303 Rheinhessen 8.0% Alc.

I was ready to buy the rest of any that K&L had, esp. at $15.99 but alas, sold out.

Thanx and Enjoy,

Walter

Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenburg Riesling Auslese 2002 Goldkapsel

I have not tasted a wine from this estate. They were little known in the US not too many years ago. However some now claim that the Gunderloch Nackenheim estate is making some of the best wines in the Rhine region, especially late harvest ones including BA and TBA. From your notes, the reputation, and the fact that the wine is a Riesling auslese, I would guess that it could have a very long life ahead - if it has not been heat damaged. Wines that leak a bit and then stop do not always have problems. However most will not take a chance on such wines, especially at a high price. Thus a store has to reduce the price greatly to move them. It sounds as if you got a very good bargin.

Buy younger vintages, they come screw-topped now, so that won't happen anymore.
