TN: inexpensive Gruner and Aglianico

With egg fried rice, tofu and crisp vegetables in a soy based dressing, and spinach, the 2009 Gustav Gruner Veltliner. Lighter styled, apple/pear fruit with a little sweet pea, apparently there's just a touch of RS here. Pleasant, innocuous, drinkable, but it's $10, and there are liters of Hofer and Huber at that price that I'd give edge to. No reason to buy again. B-/C+

Tuesday I had a board meeting, and had Chinese takeout with guys from street beforehand. But when I got home I had some Isle of Mull cheddar and wanted a glass of red wine, opened a half of the 2006 Feudi di San Gregorio "Rubrato." Dark, quite ripe, some tar and oak/coffee notes. Low acid. A couple of times I thought I caught a whiff of TCA, but whenever I went looking I didn't get it. No sign of fruit scalping, so I guess my nose was playing tricks. OK soft red for $6/375. B-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
