Hey Nils, how do you know that G did not take interpret somewhat liberally the concept of Rhône ? After all, Rhône starts in Geneva and presumably some of those water molecules must make it all the way to the coast of Roussillon?

As they say, valeur sur, pas valeur montant. A bit like Drouhin, or some of the others. Youknow (mostly) that you´ll get your money´s worth, but nothing exciting i sgonna happen ...

If that was Merlin of La Roche VIneuse (Saone et Loire), then we had a very good Macon Blanc at a most reasonable price this summer - on Place Madelein in Beaune there is a small cave/resto, La Cave Madeleine - very good, highly recommended for their exceedingly French cooking, and several very interesting open wines at no exorbitant prices, also a warm and welcoming attitude with the most unreadable ardoise known to man - but I digress. Merlin acording to the knowledgable patron makes two Macons - one is a bulk wine made from young vines, which he chruns out c 30 000 bottles of - the other is a select wine made from very old vines, planted 1935 or something like that, and of shich he makes 3 000 bottles, max. This was a beutiful chard nose with lots of butter and fruit, very concentrated, a steal at the price asked - EU 12 a bottle, off license as they say in UK. In other words, considerably cheaper than the two Chrads in this tasting, and oh so much better, so much more complexity - and at a price you can pay! I am these days looking high and low for the products of Merlin.

Hey Mike, if Guigal made this Croze with Syrah grown in the subrubs of Geneva, he´d be an even better wine maker. But presumably 2002 was not as bleak and diluted there as in les banlieus de Tain-Hermitage.
