TN Loire "Molleux en Mai"

Hello everyone, been in Wales a lot, so been lurking. Solihull Fine wine soc May meeting. Blind as usual. Bill Phillips produced a selection of Loire stickies that had been picked up in the region over the years. Most in 50cl bottles and most not available in the UK.

I thought this would be hard work and it was.

Coteaux de L'Aubance Domaine de deux Moulins 1999, restrained citrus bot nose, full fresh and sweet good acidity, honey. After an hour, opened up to reveala bot nose that was most beguiling. The wine of the night for many of us. I had to look up the appelation.

Coteaux de L'Aubance Domaine Rochambeau, 1996, nose of non bot cheapish Sauterne, no hint of chenin. Unctous ended a tad bitter.

Then a flight of golden brownies,

Coteaux de Layon Saint Lambert Domaine Jo Pithon,2001, deep brown gold, very strange nose of dentists mouthwash. Sweet and cloying, no balance, tasted of Gees linctus. UGH. ? too young, but with that colour. A boutique wine that was taking the Pithon.

Coteaux de Layon Domaine de Soucherie 1978 , the first wine I have smelt blue cheese on the nose, someone else thought ripe brie. I t even had chesses on the palate, drying out, but coyly refreshing.

Coteaux de Layon, Moulin Touchais 1983., raisins and spice, complex old chenin nose, but an old lady, drying out. Although most loved it,

The next on its own

Bonnezeaux Domaine les Grandes Vignes Vaillant 2001. Pale straw, restrained crysalised fruit nose and toooo sweet with no balance...too youmg, I found it too cloying.

A flight of three to finish

Chaumes Premiere Cru Coteaux du Layon Domaine des Fauges 2002. (available UK Waitrose). Simple waxy chenin, barley sugar nose, cloying with not enough balance.

Quarts du Chaume Ch, Pierre Brise 1999, menthol and spice nose with cough linctus finish, unbalanced.

Quarts du Chaume CH La Variere, 1999, sherbet crystals and menthol nose, complex, wonderful fruit, acididity, very long, serious. my second wine of evening.

That was really hard going, all that sweetness. But a new marker for the nose of Chenin, menthol and gee's linctus.

Next tasting the wines of Greece, now that will be interesting, I have no valid excuse not to go!!!!
