TN Tignanello 1979

Antinori's Tignanello is the grandfather of Italian wines that blend in Bordeaux varieties of grapes. It may not be the first, but it is the one that made the world take notice of this style. I do not read Italian well, but if I understand the label, the wine includes Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The grapes were grown in a vineyard called Tignanello in the hills near Florence.

This wine has been ready many years, but still is holding well. It is now a medium scarlet with hints of age showing around the rim. There still is plenty of fruit and considerable spice. The wine now is well rounded. The tannins are resolved and a bit on the dry side. This may not be the most exciting Tignanello ever made, but it still is well above average. It has kept the fruit better than most top Chianti of like age, but is not quite as intense and complex as a top Bordeaux of like age. It also is a god match for many foods. It cost me $US 11.89 shortly after release, which seems unbelievable today.
