Two beauiful whites

Last night at a small dinner party, my host poured two whites that were both impressive. The first was a Gruner Vettiner and I have to admit that I am not a fan of this grape but this was different from any that I have tasted in the past. It was a 2003 Mautlerhof Spiegel. It was not the timid or subtle wine that I am familiar with but rather a real in your face powerful wine that would wake any one up. Lot of lovely fruit right there where you could get at it. The next white was a 1998 Chateau Souverain Reserve Chardonnay. Not a hint of oak. The fruit was certainly pronounced on the nose but did not follow through on the pallet. It was a well rounded mature wine not very representative of what I expect a California Chardonnay to be. The taste lingered on and on. Bill
