In very general terms, Chardonnay is considered the "Queen" (whites seem to be considered feminine), and Cabernet Sauvignon is considered the "King." That said, I feel that this slights some worthy grapes of both colors. Probably a better concept is the "Nobel Grapes:" Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, for the whites, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Merlot, for the reds. Nowadays, these distinctions have probably less meaning, than in years past.

Chardonnay is indeed the Queen, but as much as I love Cabernet Sauvignon, there's an old saying: "Bordeaux is the wine of gentlemen; Burgundy is the wine of kings."

My Father refers to his Chard as his "Queen." I get the reference now.
