Wine Sets or Collections

I recently purchased a four-bottle "set" of wine at Sam's Club for a family member's birthday. The price was $43 and some change for the set, and it came packaged in a nice, wooden box. The brand/label was a well known name, but for the life of me I can't recall it right now (I'm having a senior moment, and I'm only 35!)

My question is, are these "sets" worth the price? Is there any value in purchasing the sets of wine as opposed to buying the bottles individually? I'm not sure if these are nice ways to try a variety of wines from a vineyard/winery, or if they typically package some of their lesser-desired bottles for a quick sale.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mike,

It would all depend on which wines were packaged in the box. I've seen the older Mondavi Coastal collection, which is pretty mundane wine. OTOH, some wineries will package a vertical of their better wines, or a horizontal. Vertical is the same wine with x years represented, the horizontal might be x single-vineyard wines from the same producer, and the same year. IMHO these are more worthy.

Anyway, the presentation of the wooden box, might lend a bit of additional " value" at least to the recipient.
