Actually the oyster thing isn't true. I tried a half dozen (fresh) ones once and only 4 of them worked.......;-)

Good point. I always tend to mentally omit Iberia when thinking about European wines - and I shouldn't.

That is positively disgusting.... but funny.

I do not think there is a very high correlation between vintage quality in Spain and Portugal and that of northern Europe.

1963 was a great Port year, but abysmal in France. 1959 was said to be bad in Spain, but proclaimed as the vintage of the century in much of Europe. 1994 was not very good in France, but the Vintage Port was great. I guess 1997 was good in Southern France and Italy as well as Port.

Depending how you measured this you may actually get a negative correlation.
