As grapes head into veraison.....

I wanted to thank those that helped me with my spraying problems. The crop of Chambourcin looks very good. This year the weather has cooperated also.

I also trapped 40 squirrels and reduced that problem hopefully to nothing. Hard to find one now.

The vines are netted so the birds will not be a problem.

My only unsolvable problem are the droves of wasps that hit the grapes last year. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a couple traps out that are catching them now, but I know its a drop in the bucket.

Thanks, Tim

Find the wasp nest... fill the shop vac with the hose near the entrance. just leave it plugged in until you have them all. cheers the islander

Tim,

Glad to hear it. I was wondering how you were doing. Did you spring for the Nova? It might be pricey upfront but I'll have mine over 8 years which comes to around $12 per year which for what it does is CHEAP!. Anyway, as far as the wasps are concerned, you'll notice that you won't have much of a problem this year. With the grapes not splitting and decaying because of fungus the wasps won't be around as much. Wasp don't make the holes, thay prey on holes that are already there. Sometimes holes made by birds. Don't worry, it sounds like things are going well.

Question for you, what kind of netting are you using and where did you get it?

I am just using netting I bought at Sears Hardware. It is plastic and comes in 14 x 14 sizes for about $8 per.

On the wasp issue, the larger ones actually do bore a hole. I was under the impression that they didn't break the skin also. What I saw was the large paper wasps would bore a hole and the yellow jackets would clean up. The whole situation was a frenzied mess. If my vinyard was several acres, their population would be diluted and probably not a problem. I have 20 vines in a city. They seem to all zero in.

BTW, I did buy nova and use it in a mix with either sulfur or a bordeaux blend. Tim
