Conversion of measurements.

I've found a wonderful mead recipe from the winemaking faq, which calls for

1 qt strawberries.

I've looked up the conversion and it implies 28 lb!! Can this be right??

There are 4 cups of chopped rhubard (about 1 ltr.)

Any ideas?

I don't know where you get your strawberries but a quart of water is about

2.1 lbs. Your strawberries must be cast in lead. ;o) Ray

This refers to volume to area that a liquid would take.

Aha! That explains it. Do you think this is whole strawberries of chopped or mushed in your experience? Thank you, Serenity

Serenity,

Unless you are going to use some form of fruit bag (usually nylon) do not mush, puree or pulverize strawberry. Even with fuit bags I still don't.....You will only give yourself frustration in clearing your wine.

Cut them in half or thirds and dump into nylon bag. Close off the bag and continue with recipe. Some fruits can be hand mashed inside the bag even more but this is a lot easier to deal with the first racking from primary to carboy.

Tom,

I just finished making strawberry wine from 15 kilos of berries... I de-stemmed the berries, crushed them (mashing them with a potato masher would have worked too) and let them ferment with the juice, similar to the way that red wine is made. I fermented them for 5 days then I strained the juice off and put the pulp into a pillow case and pressed it to get the rest of the juice. This yielded a beautiful liquid that is well on it's way to clearning now. I used pectic enzyme so maybe that is part of the reason it's cleaning easily.
