Getting grapes in central Texas

have you considered exploring your nearest wholesale produce center? In Beantown, there are 4 barrows at the wholesale terminal that make a sideline out of selling Calif. varietals. You walk in, taste a couple grapes outta the lug, cut a deal, and gonzo! Cash & carry, from the end of august, till they're gone. Our vino godfather took us in the first time because we were complete knuckleheads and couldn't find our butts w/ both hands in our back pockets. If there's a wholesale terminal nearby, that's a reasonable place to begin. Drive thru it some afternoon when the businessfolks are gone. I'd start by asking questions at your local fruitstand; once guys hear you wanna make vino, everybody's got a story...

If you want to do a longer drive, A few of the vineyards in Missouri sell grapes. But a drive to KC is a long haul.

I live in Houston and get my grapes from the West Coast or the East Coast. I have been unsuccessful at getting Texas grapes. I have tried several times over the last 5 years. If you find a source let us know.

You should get in touch with the Central Texas Wine Guild. Search Google groups. This past Saturday we purchased and crushed 1 ton of Zinfandel. It might be too late right now for you to buy grapes from a vineyard. Last year I was in your same situation. It was July and I wanted to get some grapes, and I had no luck. I called all the commercial vineyards around Fredericksburg, and nobody wanted to sell to me. You should also get in touch with the San Antonio Regional Wine Guild.
