Hi all

Being new to this wine making, if I have just tested some wine using a hydrometer, what the reading be if it has stopped fermenting. the reading I got was under 1. If I read it properly it was .998 Any advice would be most appreciated.

Rgds Kevin

It may be done but it can go lower. I would keep the air lock on it and watch it for another two weeks. If it does not bubble, it is stopped but may not be done. This would be a candidate for sorbate even if you are not going to sweeten it further. If after two more weeks it goes lower, say to .994 then you can decide at that time if it is done.

Kevin, it is normal for dry wine to have SG less than 1.000 because alcohol is less dense than water. In fact, if your wine were completely dry, I would expect the SG to be even lower. So your wine most likely has some residual sugar - slightly off-dry, in other words

- which may be fine, depending on your taste in wine. You'll just have to taste it and find out ;^)
