Pepper taste wine

Hi,

There's a wine that I can get at the liquor store called 'Casilero Del Diablo' it's a cheap wine (well for the taste, the price is cheap because I really like it). It's in the Chile section. That wine got a pepper taste. Now, I'm doing experiments and doing my own wine for a while but I'm wondering how they do that pepper taste. Is it by adding ground pepper or something. Somebody know how to do it please ?

Thanks Luc

Sometime in the past I was told winemakers will use pepper corns.

That may be true, but wines can develop that black or white pepper aroma/flavor naturally. I made a Pinot Noir in 1985 that was loaded with it, and I'm certain there was no pepper added to the wine. That's the only time I've ever seen that happen.

Some grapes and yeast combinatations are known to produce the peppery taste. It's usually the reds and and the redwine yeasts.
