Shipping wine to Canada?

Hey all, Is it possible to ship wine to Canada from California? Any international laws preventing this? I know it will probably cost a small fortune.

Thanks! Joe

You'll have to go through the LCBO. Ask them for info at: snipped-for-privacy@lcbo.com

Booze can be shipped by ground, but really, why?

When it gets to the border, you will pay through the nose. The provincial governments all collect "equivalence tax" meaning the difference between the declared value and the retail value in their own jurisdiction. So the bottle may have cost CDN$10.00 in California, but if it sells for $35.00 in the receiving province, your tax will be $25.00 per bottle.

I don't think that's quite how it works. The last time I paid duty on alcohol I paid a set fee by volume. I believe the equivalence tax is tax charged on the determined value of the product (not the selling price). Ie a $2 bottle of wine in California will be charged tax and or duty on a value of $9. Correct me if I'm wrong. Browsing the Canada Customs website is just too frustrating.

In any case, you're right, the taxes and duties are outrageous. Perhaps it is different when you import bulk quantities.
