Stavin Beans

How many times can these be used? I bought some french oak beans and was going to use them soon. Can they only be used once?

Should they be treated before being put in? I saw one site recommend boiling first for 10 minutes.

They are designed for a single use. They are cut to the right size that the wine will soak out all the good stuff. The reason barrels can be used more than once is that the wood is thicker. The wine cannot soak all the way in. But each use requires a longer stay in the barrel. With the bean it comes in from all sides and will use up the bean.

I do nothing to them. Just dump them in.

I rinse them; I reuse them in my red vinegars but they really are not made to be reused in wine.

Don't even think about boiling them, that would be like painting a restored 55 Chevy with a roller.
