French trip advice

This August we will be driving though France (limiting luggage to one case!). Our route takes us via Tournus, Gigondas, Bedoin (C. de Ventoux) and Julienas.

Given the current GBP/Euro exchange rate I will be looking for wines (red or white) in the medium price range that will benfit from storage for up to 5 years (at my age it is dangerous to look further ahead!)

I would be grateful for recommendations of favourite makers and vintages, particularly Gigondas. Are there any decent makers in C. de Ventoux?

Thanks,

Gordon

If you are going to Gigondas the best thing to do is to go to the village and taste at the Maison du Vin where you can taste a range of wines for few euros and buy them there as well. If you are going through Tournus try staying at Aux Terrasses where the 1 rosette restaurant is very good and the air conditioned rooms excellent value. The co-op at Buxy may be worth a visit too as well as that at Pouilly-Vinzelles.

I recommend Domaine de la Feuillarde at Prissy for St.Veran - M. Thomas makes good fairly priced wines. I don't know if any Burgundies are on your list but Domaine Maratray-Dubreuil in Ladoix is well worth a visit for a range of really well made wines from generics to Corton-Charlemagne, Corton Bressandes and Clos du Roi. The restaurant Aux Terrasses du Corton in the village is very good value as well.

Have a great trip

In Gigondas the restaurant Les Florets has been a winner in the past though we have not been there for a few years. Their family winery is Domaine la Garrrigue and is predominantly Vacqueyras.

Give them a try and please let me know if they are still a good stop for a great meal. Joseph Coulter J&B Journeys

You could try Roger Combe, Domaine de la Fourmone, Vacqueyras: good selection from Vacqueyras and Gigondas, and very friendly and helpful tasting.

But we originally found them by having a good bottle at dinner, and asking the restaurant where it came from, so you could find others that way.

This wine is one of my favourite, "everyday" tipples, when I can get it. Excellent value for money. Graham
