Decent pubs around Guildford?

Hi all

Due to a family wedding this weekend we are looking for some decent beer just off the M25 in the Guildford area. We do have the 2004 beer guide but would welcome updates and directions! Oh yes and the pub should do food on Friday lunchtimes.

Cheers

If you mean, quite literally, just off the M25, then you want the Black Swan at Effingham. It's still a ways from Guildford, though. The food's not brilliant, but unless it has changed vastly in the last year the changing selection of beer is usually well kept and well served.

Following up after myself, because I meant to add this (the location of the Black Swan):

I don't know if the place is in the guide. Don't know whether it's a bonus or not, but the place is reasonably child-friendly, too.

There are a few in the area. An excellent choice for beers is the Royal Oak in Wood Street Village (Surrey Pub of the Year). Has 6 handpumps, one permanently courage, can't remember what the other permanent is, always has a mild on and the other 3 pumps + the mild change very regularly. Does food lunchtimes.

Whilst in the Royal Oak you should be able to pick up a copy of News and Ale, the local CAMRA branches newsletter which always has "pub clips" about pubs in the area to update the GBG.

Also a couple of very good pubs in the Aldershot (Royal Oak)/Farnborough North (Prince of Wales - Hants Borders pub of the year) area.

I wouldn't particularly bother with the Wetherspoons in Guildford, rarely has guest beers, but the Wetherspoons in Woking is very good and well worth a visit, and obviously does the usual range of food.
