Dublin - Non Tourist Pubs

Any recommendations for a first time visit to Dublin? I'm looking for good beer and a pleasant pub.

For good beer, there's Messers McGuire's (by O'Connell bridge) and The Porterhouse (western edge of Temple Bar). Both brew (or did a couple of years ago) their own beers. From memory, McGuire's had the slightly better food menu altough The Porterhouse wasn't bad.

I don't think you'll find many tourist free pubs in central Dublin. That doesn't mean they're bad pubs though. Paul Black's recommendations are must-visits, though you should be aware that Dublin brewpubs are more winebarey than English equivalents. A genuine Dublin serious drinking experience can be had in Mulligans just round the corner from McGuires in Poolbeg Street, one of the all time great Dublin pubs. Only Guinness but it's as good as you'll find in the Republic.

Add these to your list: The Long Hall, South Great George's Street - beautiful historic pub Ha'penny Bridge Inn, at the South End of the Ha'penny Bridge - last "locals" pub in Temple Bar (my old local)

Drink Guinness in both of these pubs and sit at the bar if alone. You'll probably end up in a conversation you didn't expect.
