Manchester Food and Drink Pub of the Year

I have just found out that the Manchester Food and Drink Pub of the Year was awarded last night. Nominees come from right across the ten metropolitan boroughs of Greater Manchester and not simply from within the administrative area of the city. And the winner is (cue fanfare)...

The King's Arms, Bloom Street, Salford M3 6AN

An excellent choice if I may say so - well done to the judges! Actually they got it right last year too because they awarded this accolade to The Crescent - also in Salford. It seems that Salford has the best pubs in Greater Manchester!

Gavin, Can I take it that you are from the other side of the border then? ;-). Dave.

You've got me sussed, Dave! Actually I don't live there now but I used to - but have worked in the city for many years. It's not often that Salfordians (even adopted ones like me!) get to blow their own trumpets so please forgive me. Just to restore the balance, one of my all time favourite pubs is The Marble Arch on Rochdale Road!

In actual fact Salford is awash with crap pubs amongst which are one or two gems.

So, pretty much like any other town then.

I have a theory that the number of pubs in a given area (say, a two mile radius) is proportional to the number of people, but the number of decent pubs is constant no matter where in the country you are.

As Peter has already said that makes Salford like many other places. However, having 2 out of the 5 finalists for this award is something to be proud of I think. The Lamb in Eccles (the other finalist from Salford) is a mighty fine pub too.
