Pub of the Year

Worcestershire Canalside Pub wins Pub of the Year award

A former Alvechurch private club that only opened as a pub four years ago has been awarded Pub of the Year by Redditch and Bromsgrove Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). The Weighbridge located in Alvechurch Boat Centres Marina on the Worcester Birmingham Canal was once the old Weighbridge office for offloading coal barges to horse and cart for local deliveries. In 2002 it was converted into a cosy, canalside free house with a friendly atmosphere serving real ales. The regular beer is Tillerman's Tipple a tasty and hoppy session bitter brewed by local brewery Weatheroak Ales. A guest beer is invariably from a local microbrewery. As well as the beers which were judged to be in superb condition, the judges highlighted other aspects of the pub which contributed to the top marks achieved. These included a layout of three individual rooms (one non-smoking) each with their own character, a warm welcome and an individuality that has been lost in so many pubs, spoilt by pub companies with standard and tired themes. The judges also paid tribute to the selection of home made and good value food that is served. The pub runs an autumn beer festival aimed at supporting local breweries. Congratulations to licensees John and Jayne Humphreys.
