Fat Cat is Pub of the Year

I see the Fat Cat in Norwich has been chosen as CAMRA's 2005 Pub of the Year:

The three runners-up were the Old Swan, Netherton, West Midlands, the Arden Arms, Stockport, and the New Inn, Halse, Somerset.

Obviously I was hoping the Arden Arms would win, but congratulations to the Fat Cat.

Ahh yes the Arden. Excellent place to try after/before our visit to the Railway.

What happened to the pub around there called the Midway (I think) used to go in there in the 70's/80's for a pint or three of Pollards ?

Come to think of it what happened to Pollards - the beer and the brewer ?

Cheers

John

Still there - it was for a long time a John Smith's pub and now belongs to some pub company. Still sells real AFAIK but nothing noteworthy.

Went out of business a very long time ago, over 20 years, I think.

I remember Pollards from my student days (yonks ago!). In fact when I finished Uni a group of us hired a boat on the Broads for a week and took a barrel of Pollards with us - just for those emergencies when you had to moor a wee way away from a pub :-)

I have a dim recollection that it was "Dave Pollard" and he moved on to become head brewer at a bigger but local (NW) brewery - or perhaps i'm dreaming !

The Arden Arms is still a lucky dip in the 2005 Good Pub Guide. Not a main entry I'm afraid. However they do comment on the "well preserved traditional horseshoe bar".

Oh dear, what a sad comment on the priorities of the GPG :-(

I don't suppose the Railway or Navigation even merit a mention.

Don't know about the others, but I've never been disappointed with my trips to the Fat Cat !
