Old Hall Beer Festival, Chinley

In my relentless search to seek out new beer festivals, here's one worthy of consideration.

The Old Hall Inn at Chinley in Derbyshire is a wonderful old C16th pub in the heart of the village. It has had an annual beer festival for some years now which is very popular with locals but has failed to reach the wider audience it deserves.

I attended last year and it's fabulous. Multi-roomed (and in fact multi-pubbed - other pubs appear to take part), it's nice to have a festival which is not in a large civic hall or sports venue with rank upon rank of barrels. (OK there's a small marquee in the grounds, but it's only a small part of the whole)

This year's is bigger than ever with 100 beers, food and entertainment.

There's an hourly train service from Manchester and Sheffield and it's about a half mile walk down the hill and a little way up the other side.

When I win the lottery, I'm setting up a beer festival with no music. It's every effing where nowadays.

I know, I agree entirely. But at least at this one you can escape into another room or tent!

A few years ago I was in the USA and went to the annual beer festival of the Penn State Brewing Co in Pittsburgh. It was a nice building with a courtyard with an umpah band playing and we went inside for several of their excellent beer. Eventually the umpah band came inside with their instruments and said "We've had a request to come and play inside-------- from the people outside" . Sums it up really.

BTW the Chinley service is only hourly on Saturday. EVery two hours on Friday and SUnday

Well you'd have thought they'd have had the sense to shut the F up then :)

It's absurd to put music on at beer festivals. It's like choosing the right kind of music to play for people whose names begin with an A.
