Sad belated news.

I've just picked up the sad news from a US beer website, that after a short illness, beer writer Richard Boston died on 22nd December, aged only 67.

I'd not picked up on this news (nor it would seem had the Telegraph writer, who mentioned him in the article kindly linked here by PeterE).

His book "Beer & Skittles" is excellent & older beerfans will remember his regular Guardian beer column which helped support a fledgling CAMRA, & shamed & derided cack-keg brewers in the early 1970's.

There's an obit by Alan Rusbridger & a responding letter on the Guardian site -

I've had login troubles as I've forgotten my Guardian password, but the best bit so far involved Mr Boston inadvertently becoming Jacques Tati's stand-in in one of his films!

Thank you for pointing out this sad news. His Grauniad articles in the

1970s were partly responsible for arousing my interest in real ales and I remember well looking forward eagerly to his pieces each week. I too have a much-thumbed copy of "B&S" lurking somewhere in the undergrowth that is my "library" and shall now waste frustrating hours trying to find it again.

He brought much pleasure to many with his writings and, perhaps, made an important contribution to the survival and renaissance of real beer.

MikeMcG ( snipped-for-privacy@my-deja.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

He was featured on this afternoon's "Last Word" on Radio 4, remembered by Python Terry Jones.

Ta for that - it's the 2nd mention I've heard that he didn't drink beer, but supported the idea of good local beer!

The Boston bit is abt 8:30min in. Cheers, Mike.

Thank you very much; I usually listen to "Last Word" and missed it this week. Therefore your tip was doubly welcome. A nice tribute from Terry Jones.
