Hi everyone, I don't know if this is the correct NG but here goes, my 23 year old son is thinking of moving to England at the end of the year and he is hoping to get work at a medium size hotel in London or thereabouts. What we wish to know is what are the wages paid to bartenders in the London area. Also an idea of the cost of living would be appreciated. Many thanks for any replies Cheers Tony..

Generally I'd guess around the minimum wage level (4.50-5.00UKP/hr) but with tips he might gat a bit more (we're not used to this whole generosity thing yet ;~)
If he's experienced, or skilled in cocktail mixing, cellar-work, a bit of management, or something similar, then he'll prob be in a better position.
It also depends on the type of place he wants to work - hotel, nightclub, trad pub? all have pros & cons. cheers MikeMcG
I've just noticed that you *did* say what sort of place he wants to work :~)
a god place to get an idea of both wages & accom costs is a London freeads site I think this is one cheers M
Tipping does take place in British pubs - it goes like this-
customer: "will you have a drink yourself?"
barperson :"thank you but I'll have to drink it at the end of the shift" and pockets the price of a drink.
Very often the response of the inexperienced bar person is "no thanks".
Tell your son.
