Beach Chalet San Francisco

I will be visiting San Francisco in July, and will be staying near Sloat and the Great Highway. Does anyone have suggestions for beer at the Beach Chalet? I see that they have $1 beers on Monday from 3 to 6. My wife who grew up down the street is anxious to see the murals.

I recommend going to the Beach Chalet for the view (especially at sunset) and the depression-era murals. The beer is drinkable, the food is edible, but neither is cause for excitement. Whatever standard ale or IPA or stout or Porter they have on should be OK. Avoid their faux lagers, if they have any on.

I don't remember a standout beer there. I'd say go with the sampler.

I agree with Jon ... nice place to sit and look out at the ocean ... but the beers there aren't worth writing home about.

Someone mentioned to me I while back that they thought that they brewed from "extract". Which would kind of explain why their beer is so lackluster.

There is better places to get good beer elsewhere in the city, IMHO, most accessible by Muni lightrail and a few minutes of walking.

BTW, has anyone tried Pizza Orgasmica & Brewery yet in SF?

I saw their booth at the Bay Area Brewfest the other weekend, but I was pouring some tasty belgian beers, so I didn't get a chance to sample any.

Not me...

But I had to check out the website:

Some of the pizzas look yummy, but I can't seem to find a list of their beers... What the heck? Am I just being thick?

Doesn't look like they have a list of their beers on the website. Hard to say why, but the beer doesn't look like their top priority.

I did go over to beeradvocate.com and found one of their beers (IPA), which at the time of the review, seems to have been made at the Devils Canyon Brewing Company in Belmont, which is a small contract/brew-your-own kind of place. Maybe they were just using them during start-up.

I also notice on probrewer.com that the Beach Chalet is looking for a brewer. It would be an interesting place to work, but I'm not sure I want to be an extract brewer: my favorite part of the brewing process is the mash.

From the list of their locations I think the place was occupied by Front Room Pizza in the past. They probably just changed the name of the place to reflect what is popular.

What, Jon, you don't like DMS?

They have a handpump, do they not? Typically that'll be some English-y style and is probably worth the effort. At least I think I remember something decent being on the one time.

It's all about the view. And the wait, if you're thinking of going there on a weekend.

Like most brewpubs, whatever they have on "cask" is usually muddy, over-hopped, and not-quite-fully fermented.
