Hi all Does anyone have experience with or opinions on the 'Better bottle' carboys made from PET plastic, at all. Many thanks in advance.

I've been using Better Bottles for about 2 years. There are some drawbacks; 1) the stoppers need to be #10, 2) tap at the bottom is 1/2 ID. 3) tap is a great source of infection, not a good way to sanitize/clean the inside of the tap (can gather dust, bacteria) therefore an added step for cleaning. The pros are the weight, the tap (easy to draw gravitys), unbreakable, ability to transfer O2 free. There are others, but I'd rather drink.

I have a plain one, that is, untapped, which is now host to a vigorously bubbling EPA. I like mine. Got a 6-gal to do 5-gal brews. Actual vol. was 5.25, and the head hasn't reached the top yet. Depending on the yeast and temp, I might use a blow-off tube instead of the airlock now going. Sometimes I use it to bottle from as well, but with a cane, hose, and bottle-filler attachment. Very easy to handle.

Hi Many thanks for your reply I will give it a little thought. Some of the forums discussing the better bottle I have found, seem generally to be positive. Thanks

I have also learned this bottling trick as well, but I use a length of tubing and connect it to the out diptube in my keg and transfer O2 free directly to my keg. Less mess and less hands in the beer.

I think glass is the preferred way. I have made wine for 20 years but am relatively new to beer. Many of the principles are the same though. You must have a container that is easily sanitizable. For me that is glass or stainless steel. I have used the 'better bottle' but have over the years of cleaning with a brush scratched up the inside of the top of the bottle and this could lead to contamination. One other drawback I consider more important is that these 'better bottles' are flexible so anytime you move it or set it for racking you can draw air back through the airlock and contaminate that way. Either will work but I much prefer glass over time.

BierNewbie rant over.
