add this too to the miserable and confusing way to study chinese, i am talking about the word jing/ching/king arrrghhh! "Cha King (Tea Dictionary) Lu Yu (Tang Dynasty A.D. 618 - 907) was the leading tea expert in this ........... described in the Cha King." icetea look you got traditional -simplified -bopomofo -pingyin...jeezzzz! i get so mad trying to understand chinese terms (written in abc..blah blah blah) i guess i should just learn the language uhhh?

No way around it. As someone who started 25 years ago (as a hobby, not professionally) I can tell you - its a beauty if you start learning calligraphy and writing first. IMHO, IMHO, IMHO.....
