1978 Bordeaux

A friend has inherited the following 1978 Bordeaux wines

Chateau Fombrauge Chateau Houissant Chateau Fonreaud Chateau Roquegrave

Apparently well cellared since purchase close to Vintage.

In a couple of weeks we are getting together with a few other winos to try them.

Any ideas what we are likely to find?

Likely you will find wine. 1978 was a good year but problematic for the long haul. I would suggest trying them and reporting back to us.

Hopefully they will still be OK but I'd have a back-up or two handy. WHile 1978 was a fairly good vintage in Bordeaux, these wines are unclassified regional wines and may be a bit old and tired.

We are tasting a a wine tutor's house - she has a cellar to die for!

I almost hope the Bordeaux had died and we feel the need to raid the cellar!

I'm with Bill. I've liked several 1978s recently, but they've all been major classified growths, and all mature. Fombrauge is only one of these I've even heard of. In general I think Graves was the most successful in '78, though Margaux did well too. Are these all St Emilions like the Fombrauge?
