1998 Hoepler Erwein St Laurent

I saw this wine for sale yesterday and bought a bottle to try out with food.

The nose of the wine was not particularly special, I felt it was nothing to remember.

The label at the back, however, was rather accurate, describing the wine as having notes of plum accompanied with vanilla tastes. At one point, there was also a long peppery ending to the taste. Having breathed a bit more, the wine developed a sweetish ending. A good wine, IMHO.

The wine changed very much after the bottle was opened, and the taste left me wondering about the grape or blend of the wine. Initially, the wine reminded me mostly of a Bordeaux type blend, after a while I was sure it was a blend with mostly Pinot Noir and at some point I was sure there was a lot of Syrah.

Having checked the Web site of the winery today it finally dawned on me that the St Laurent mentioned on the label is the grape. I can't even remember ever hearing of such a grape before.

Cheers,
