2001 - Enjoyable now, it will develop over the next four to five years

When wine critics indicate how long you should cellar a wine, what is the starting year? I have always thought that they meant years after the vintage year.

So a 2001 vintage wine that will develop over the next four to five years will be developing over 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and maybe to 2006.

I think it's safe to assume after the release date.

I don't think so Fred. I believe the critics are referrring to years after present (meaning the date tasted). This can usually be determined by notes given by the taster (eg last tasted 10-1-03 ) or by the tasting event (eg barrel tasting of 2003 Bordeaux April 2004).
