A "special" Birthday wine

Some friends stopped in yesterday and presented me with a bottle of wine in honor of my birthday. It's a 60% Grenache 40%Syrah blend produced by Costieres De Nimes in France. It may have been produced in France and bulk shipped to the USA for bottling because the name of the wine, "Old Fart" doesn't sound particularly French. I haven't tried the wine yet, and it's probably mundane, but the label is priceless. :-)

First, congrats!

Second, over the years I've gotten quite a few bottles that had labels that were just too good. Most of the wines, I assume, are probably worth less to me, than is the label. I only hope that I'm not passing on some real "gems," like "Roadkill Red," et al. :-}

Hi Susannah, You might have brought up the subject for a new thread: "Funky Wine Names". I've seen specialty beers with "interesting" names for some time, and I think the wine industry is catching up. On our last shopping trip, my wife picked out a few bottles of "Dirty Dick's Ale" from the UK. Can't imagine why she did that. :-) Dick R.

Heh, beer brewers are nice people anywhere! There's a brewer in San marino, the small kingdom near the italian adriatic coast, who produces some special beers. One is named "E figoun", which is Romagna & Marche slang for "great pussy". Another one from them is "la Tabachera", showing the picture of the fat tobacconist from Federico Fellini's Amarcord movie.

Large outdoor event area including gazebo and picnic area. Wines: Reserve White Zinfandel, Alpenglo Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cherry, Plum, Red Zinfandel, Pinot Gris, Roadkill Red, Millennium Port, etc.

Many of their varietal wines are better, than is the red-blend RKR. Though Colorado is not often thought of as a "wine heaven," there are some decent small producers there, mainly in the Palisades "banana belt" region near Grand Junction. Plum Creek Winery does some very nice Cab S and Fs, and the Vail Valley winery offers some very nice wines too, though all were from CA juice. I think that they did develop a CO-only wine line, but forget the name - Aspen something??? I believe that Ed Rasimus is in CO, so he can probably fill in details that have either changed, since I last lived there, or correct things that my failing memory have passed by.

Depending on where you are located, Colorado Cellars may be able to ship to you. The wine was available at the venerable Applejack's in Lakewood, CO.

IIRC, Spotted Dick was named for a pudding with raisins, wasn't it?

For your theme wine, you might want to look into a Livermore winery, Murrieta's Well, wine, The Adultress. It was a SB blend. I have one bottle left, but can't find it in the cellar, or the database.
