Ah, a good GV!

Hi I wrote some time ago about a less than satisfying bottle of Gruener Veltliner to which was answered that the bottle likely was tainted (fruit scalping) by the cork. Now, today I had an excellent wine - Mantlerhof Kremstal Terrassen 2004, probably a generic estate wine, 12.5% abv exhibiting clarity, zippy acidity and lots of taste and good length, perhaps with some less varietal character (white pepper and hay) but nonetheless a very satisfying bottle. Highly recommended at the price (15USD here, probably half that in Austria?) And, yes, it was a Stelvin...

I guess I know who answered ... ;-)

Josef ("Sepp") Mantler is very traditional, but last winter he started to study the matter of alternative closures intensely, and came to the point to start to bottle his medium range under Stelvin. For the early to drink basics I guess he continued synthetics, and with top bottlings he will wait a little before turning to screwcaps.

As to the wine, it's probably the same as "GV Löss-Terrassen". Open , enter "mantlerhof" in the window at the upper right and click "GO". They say regular price is EUR 6,94, while right now they have discounted it to EUR 4,49.

Mhm, seems to be the same, with a different name and this evaluation:

90 Punkte von A La Carte: mineralisch, dicht, straff, viel Terroir, wunderschöne Frucht, solid und körperreich, dabei kompakt At 4.50 EUR it must be a steal!

Most certainly. We are in quite a happy situation over here, since the only tax on wine is VAT at 20%, which enables super bargains, of course!
