AMAZING Red Wine at dinner...what was it???

Hello to all. We went out to dinner at an expensive steakhouse with a friend and he ordered an expensive Spanish red that he said was about $100 for a half bottle. It was UNBELIEVABLE. And I don't ever drink wine, much less red, yet I find myself wanting this wine again. I can't describe it except to say it was great! We never asked him what it was, but by the price, is there any way to find it again? Thanks. (PS It is not possible to reach him to ask him what it was.)

Nobody can identify a wine like that simply by the price and country. Anything anybody can tell you would simply be a guess. If you can't reach your friend, why not try calling the restaurant? They probably don't have many Spanish reds at $100 a half bottle--most restaurants don't even have many half bottles.

Ken,

I did call the restaurant and as you say, they really could not say. As a matter of fact, they said they did not have any wine that was that expensive. Was our friend exaggerating on the price? Perhaps, as he does like to brag a little bit. I am just so sad because it was sooo good and I could kick myself for not asking what exactly it was. Anyway, I just thought that by the price someone might jump in and say, "Oh, that sounds like XYZ, my favorite Spanish red." Oh well. C'est la vie.

Then perhaps your friend *was* exaggerating. But you might want to call the restaurant back and ask what Spanish reds they have in half bottles. As I said, most restaurants have very few wines in half bottles. There's a fair chance there's only one, and even if iit's a two or three, you'll have narrowed the choices down a lot.

It was an expensive Spanish red wine.

Here's a hint: call the steakhouse and ask them to fax you their winelist, maybe you'll be able to figure it out from there.

Unfortunately, there are too many Spanish wines that can bear such a high price tag. Trying to guess which one the original poster had at the steak- house is just a game. Now, Pesquera Reserva is usually in the 25 euros for a plain bottle, say 15 euros for a split. What a markup if the price was $100.

Whether one can think of Pesquera Reserva as excellent stuff is other thing that we could discuse for quite a long time, I think.
