Armagnac

Dear NG:

Someone many years ago gave me a 750 ml bottle of Cles Des Ducs Armagnac distilled in 1942.

It came in a nice little wooden box with a key lock.

I haven't the slightest knowledge of Spirits, quality or value. I have no interest in drinking it nor do I even know if I should.

Is there someone in the group who could direct me to where I could find out if it holds any value.

I found several 1942 Armagnacs at:

. Although there may not be an exact match with your bottle, this page indicates that 1942 Armagnac of quality usually is selling in the few to several hundred $US range. A wine auction house would be your best source for evaluation of what your Armagnac might bring at auction. Since sellers of old Armagnac have to make a profit, what you would be paid for your bottle would be less than the retail price. You should specify everything printed on the bottle if you want a good evaluation of the Armagnac by an auction expert. Unlike wine, Armagnac does not improve or decline in bottle. The only problem would be if the cork has developed a leak and part of the Armagnac has been lost.

If it helps any, when I visit a wine and spirits shop in Hunterdon County, NJ (the Wine Hut) I noticed a few vintage cognacs and armagnacs on display shelves some dated around late 30's early 40's. The prices I saw ranged between 700 to 900 bucks for 750ml!
