The question of the correct pronunciation of René Engel's surname arose when I was browsing the shelves of North Berkeley Wine a while back: David Hinkle, their importer, pronounced it as 'Ahn-jay' -- which would make perfect sense if it were a French surname. However, applying the same logic by which we get the pronunciation of Moët (e.g.), and recognizing the likely Germanic origin of the name, I'd expect something more like "Eng-ell" (German) or "Ahng-ell" (Fraleman). So, I appeal to you who profess some knowledge of the language: how is it pronounced in Dijon?
