aus.food: some background and a call for support ....

Hello, alt.food.wine'ers ( as opposed to alt.food.whiners ;)

I only recently discovered this group, and have mainly been lurking, except for a couple of posts. I hope to find the time to contribute more in future, but have been enjoying my readings thus far ;) I'm Lea, a resident of Melbourne, VIC.

Anyway, I know there are more than a few Aussies that post here .. so forgive me for barging in with my own agenda ... but I think you'll be interested ..

I am here writing for your support when ( hopefully ) a call for a new newsgroup is issued. I have set the ball in motion, and have asked this to be one of the groups a call goes out to.

The group is aus.food.

Why ?

The Brits have a food group, as do the Merkins ( I love the group: alt.2eggs.sausage.beans.tomatoes.2toast.largetea.cheerslove - how good a name is that ?! ;) Along with rec.food.cooking ( and others ), it is a PROLIFIC, and POPULAR group ... but ... everybody posts when this little Australian is in bed .. by the time I get there, conversations have been done & dried. Adding a 'me too' is often inappropriate and obsolete. Waiting 24hrs for a reply can be cumbersome too. A post entitled "What bush foods could add flavour to me Wallaby stew ?" often go unanswered, as do "Breakfast at that new cafe in St. Kilda" ( St - where ??? :) :)).

So not to detract or steal from your own very worthy NG ... but it would be great to have your support when the call to vote comes around. Maybe you want to ask an Australian about a new wine that has come on your O/S market. Maybe you are planning to visit relatives and are curious if you can buy soy-bread in the grocers while you are here. Maybe you'd just like to chat ( or lurk ) in another country, cyber-style.

Whatever your reason, I urge you to support aus.food. Thanks

( a copy of the charter can be posted or emailled by request. Please note this will be posted in full when the call for expression of interest comes around. Please email me if you have any queries or concerns. )
