Austrian Wine (from January thread)

Forgive the delay of a month in responding!

SO:

WEISS is Manfred Weiss in Apetlon (we'll start with a couple of vintages of the gruner veltliner eisweins)

and it's HEISS from Illmitz -1998 TBA Weissburgunder-Sauvignon Blanc -1999 TBA Riesling -2001 Eiswein Traminer -2001 BA Sauvignon Blanc Akazien-Barrique

We head back out there in a few weeks to taste the new wines, so hopefully will have more to add to our portfolio.

What are your favorites?

Never heard of him, but that doesn't say too much.

Which Heiss?

No idea, I haven't tasted any. Don't forget: Just about every winegrower in Burgenland (from those bottling themselves) makes noble sweet (botrytis) wines and many of them icewine. If it's Franz Heiss, he's quite good, and normally you should not be disappointed. What you prefer is a matter of taste. The last wine should be slightly dryer and is oaked, of course.

It is Franz Heiss, and I am very excited to bring his stuff over. While it's true that almost all Burgenland vintners make a botrytis affected wine, there are of course those that do it with more finesse. Heiss certainly falls into that catagory . His Akazien-barrique is in fact aged only in barrels made from Acacia wood. No oak. Such an interesting wine.

A lot of our dry gruner veltliners are really typical Austrian style, so it will be interesting to see how the American palate goes for it.
