TN: Austrian Riesling from outside my comfort zone

Betsy picked up some Schaller & Weber smoked pork chops, served those with a savoy cabbage/porcini/pancetta side and sweet potatoes. I was thinking Alsace Riesling, but instead popped an Austrian Riesling, the

2004 Graf Hardegg "Steinbugel" Riesling (Weinviertel). I tempered my expectations, as my dry Austrian Riesling experience has been mostly Wachau, Kamptal, Kremstal, and I have a vague notion that Weinviertel is not as respected. This ended up being pretty nice. Dry but with a sweet note to the lemon and peach fruit, rather intense minerality, decent finish. There's a (pleasant) light note of pine, but the stony minerality is dominant. Good acidity. This is a little lacking in concentration and length vs. a really top flight Riesling, but for the level it's quite a decent wine. B/B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Let's see, I had leftover Kobe-style burger with the remaining Rutherford Estate '93 Cab. Can I come over and dine with you and Betsy? I need to expand my horizons a bit more! However, the burger was done rare on the grille, so with the re-heating of it, and the bacon, it was on the rare side of medium, and there was still that wonderful Rutherford "Dust," in the wine. It was over the hill, when I popped the cork, the night before, but held up (Vac-u-Vin and 'fridge) enough to drink and enjoy.

Tonight, it's back to the turkey, but I do not yet know the preperation. Maybe I'll try the GV, that was slated as a starter-wine last week. Who knows, maybe it'll blow my socks off. Besides, I do like most GV's, however more as starter wines, than as accompaniments to the main, if one can call the leftover turkey, a "main."

Oops, should have read '92 Cab. Red wine may have certain healh benefits, but making one a better typist, is not one of them.

Kobe/Waygu beef is not exactly slumming! Rutherford dust is one of my favorite atttributes in CA cabs (though I have some late 90s BV Rutherford that might have other attributes , unfortunately).
