Costco's wine stewards, Kirkland CdP is decent

Two interesting developments on the Costco front:

  1. Two of the Seattle area stores, 4th Avenue South and Rose Hill/Kirkland, now have full time wine stewards. I met Sally, the steward (stewardess?) of the 4th Ave store last week. She say it's a pilot program in just these two stores. She recently transfered here from a Price/Costco in Missouri, where, as unofficial wine steward, she helped double the store's wine sales in a matter of months. Somebody upstairs noticed and decided to try it on a formal basis.

  1. Costco 4th Ave is carrying a 2005 Cuvee de Nalys Chateauneuf du Pape under it's own Kirkland label. I cracked a bottle with David LeClaire, sommelier and wine event promoter, and we both agreed it's certainly worth the .95 Costco is asking. Anybody have info on Dom. de Nalys?

Sorry for the slow reply. I find entries about Dom. de Nalys in both John Livingstone-Learmonth's 1989 edition of Wines of the Rhone and Robert Parker's 1997 Edition of his book on the Rhone Valley. In summary, it's a well-respected estate that makes wine using all 13 varieties, but employs carbonic maceration to make fruity, easy to drink wines that don't age particularly well except in outstanding vintages. Given the reputation of '05, this ought to be a good wine and might even be able to age beyond 5 years.

Here's the blend, as listed on the back label.

50% Grenache 40% Syrah 10% Mourvedre-Cinsault

It also says, "...this CdP is ready to drink, and will evolve over the next ten years..." So, apparently they're expecting it to age well, too.

Twenty bucks for a good CdP? That's hard to beat these days. Tonight I saw the '05 V. Telegraphe for $56 at Whole Paycheck, and the V. Donjon for $58. $58??? Man, I remember when Donjon was only $26, and that was for the outstanding '98 vintage.

No information on de Nalys, but just want to add that I bought 2 bottles. Opened 1 in July. Liked it; would buy another to replace it if I found it. Dee Dee

Just drove by Nalys. The vines I saw looked a little young and unkempt, but of course I only saw a fraction. Big modern facility.
