Hudson Valley Wine Fest 2003

Despite the intermittent storms, we ventured out to our first broad tasting of NY state wines at this past weekend's gathering. We were glad that (i) it was raining and (ii) we went on the Sunday, as the marquee was full and hot but not impossibly so; the previous day, when the sun had shone, must have been horrible!

The show seemed pretty well organised, with some good music on outdoor stage in the sunny gaps, OK food offerings, and plenty of water to rinse glasses between wines, as well as a small program of food discussion.

The basic result, though, was that there were very, very few offerings from the ~40 wineries that were worth drinking, much less at their price (generally ~$13 for varietals, $6-7 for the ubiquitous fruit/sweet offerings). Jenny and I tasted maybe 80 wines over the course of the day; dissappointingly undistinctive, with a general lack of complexity, character, finish... you get the message. Even the 'picnic wines' did not show well for their class. So, hence, not vast notes because they just weren't worth it. Long way to go for the state's industry if this was representative.

There were two (and a half) bright spots for us. The one wine we bought was Fox Run's 2001 Meritage. This was noted by the server as 'probably the best thing you'll drink here' and he was quite right. Granted, it's priced accordingly ($35) but this had some structure, depth, and a very pleasant aftertaste; worthwhile. The other thing we bought was a cream sherry from Hunt Country Vineyards, which was the pick of the assortment of liqueurs etc. on offer; smooth, nutty, rounded ($13 I think).

The half was a cider, but I seem to have lost the maker. Welcomingly clean and refreshing, but with absolutely no follow-through, so not enough to tempt us. Useful set of notes there, huh?!

Anyway, it was probably worthwhile to do once, but we would not go back. $18 per head felt pretty steep for admission at the end, too.

Though I'm a Hudson Valley resident, I couldn't get energy to go to Red Hook. It didn't look like a very impressive lineup. Fox Run, Sheldrake, and Standing Stone were the only ones that seemed at all inviting to me. Was the cider from Warwick Valley by chance? I've liked that one (at least more than their wine!).

As to NY wines, I do like some Finger Lake whites, but usually find them overpriced compared to German Riesling, for instance. I'm afraid I feel all the Hudson Valley wineries should make cider. Best NY wines are probably from Long Island (any North Fork wineries at this?), but they tend again to not be bargains.

Indeed it was - well caught, and thanks. We came to that at the end of the day, but I think that fatigue may have balanced by plus points for the refreshment value, so probably a fair rating.

All Seneca region, I think. I'd echo your comments, basically; I was surprised to find that there was so little worthwhile on offer compared to e.g. Virginia, which I would imagine has if anything a smaller industry but seems to produce more worthwhile products. [Caveat that I know basically zilch of the NY wines; this was my first exposure of any variety] Would be interested in a couple of Long Island recommendations.

Paumanok, Lenz , Jamesport are comparatively good. Pellegrini can be good but are spotty. And I've liked wines from The Old Field Vineyards, but should put in a disclaimer the Baizs are friends, I've worked harvest, so I'm prejudiced.

But for the most part even the best LI wines offer questionable QPR- the good $20 ones I'd buy if they were $12. Dale

Oh yeah, plus the 1997 Macarini Bdx-blend fooled a bunch of people at a Bdx tasting!

Ewan,

although my exposure is limited, I haven't been overly thrilled by Virginia's offerings from a sample of 6 wineries.
