Ice wine in danger this year

The weather has been warm here in Pa. We have had no snow yet. On the other hand, I had a taste of an ice wine made in Erie, PA and didn't like it much. I thought that it was way too sweet.

Hello Barb,

I just got an email newsletter from Pinnacle Ridge, a Berks County producer, indicating that the window was closing for icewine and that they might make a 'late harvest" wine out of their Vidal grapes instead. The month is still young, however; January is usually our coldest month.

I tasted a few ice wines on our annual wine tasting trip to the finger lakes. Agree the two I tried were WAY too sweet.

I did try several late harvests which tasted much better.

Americana Late Harvest in particular deserves mention.

So if a wine is harvested in Jan is it vintage 2006 or 2007? :)

2007 of course. As an example, I know that Inniskillin had two harvests one year recently.

Sorry got confused, it is the year of the growing season that matters.

Must have had too much of that 2001... ;-)

Interesting. Are the two harvests differentiated and indicated somehow on the bottles i.e. 2006a and 2006b?

Mind you, the original German Ice wine is certainly very sweet, but also balanced by a blistering acidity which makes it a fabulous drink :-). Your specimens probably had too little of that. Anders

Legally, there may be a difference between Canadian law and US law in this regard. I distinctly remembe ronce being shown in a wine shop two bottles of Columbia Crest late harvest riesling with the same vintage year (199x). One was denoted "second harvest". The shop owner showed me someting published by the winery that said the grapes for the other one were harvested in February of 199x. The one labeled "second harvest" was made from grapes harvested shortly after the 199x regular harvest.
