It's been a while! TN: Joh. Jos. Prum 1999 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese

Hi yall! It's been a while since I last posted anything. Lost connectivity, vacations, kid problems, work problems, computer problems etc

During Alison and my 1st year anniversary to New York, I had a chance to meet Mr. Dale Williams. Hi Dale, remember me? Anyway, I will post what I can remember of the New York trip in later posts.

Dale, Alison and I met at the Bandol Wine Bar. Had a nice meeting and Dale suggested a couple of wines. One was a Rhone. Well, since that meeting, we have been drinking alot more red wines (If yall remember, I liked the Rieslings and sweeter wines. Thanks Dale!)

Tonight, the kids went swimming at the neighbors, and I decided to open one of the bottles of Joh. Jos. Prum 1999 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese (Erzeugerabfullung Weingut Mosel-Saar-Ruwer QmP also appears on the label, in addition to Valckenberg) that I purchased at Garrett Wine (thanks Dale!)

We had Chicken and Rice with a Caesars mixed salad. I detected petrol(diesel) and citrus in the nose and noticed some acidity. As the wine warmed during the meal, the acidity dissipated.

An excellent wine... I wish I had more than the one other bottle I have setting up. When should this second bottle be enjoyed?

Oh, I was drinking this from the Spiegelau Authentis wine glasses Alison bought me for my 40th birthday(Aug 1)

Thanks, and Take Care

Walter

I think readers here would enjoy your story of the Bdx other table rejected.

Unfortunately, I think I never got around to posting notes on that day- and writing them down tends to solidify them in my memory (as well as make them searchable!). What I recall was a '01 Clos Roche Blanche Sauvignon, the Rhone which was a Gigondas (I think a '98, but forget producer), and a white Burgundy ( I want to say Fichet Meursault, but wouldn't swear to it).

Whoa Walter, now there's a step up! JJ Prum is one of the finest producers in the Mosel, and the Sonnenuhr is the finest vineyard in Wehlen. I'm not sure I've tasted the '99 Spatlese , but I thought the Kabinett was fine. An older JJ Prum WS Auslese GoldKapsule was one of the finest Rieslings I've ever tried. When young the sulphur can be quite high.

Valckenberg in this case is the shipper- they have a nice lineup of wines- JJ Prum, von Schubert, Kesselstatt (sp?) , etc. But be wary of wines where Valckenberg is the producer, quality is highly variable. The store is Garnet, to be exact.

Coolness does accentuate acidity.

As I've said, I haven't tasted. But my guess for a Prum Spatlese would be it would be at its prime 8-10 years from vitage. A lot depends on your tastes however- it's you're getting petrol now, it's likely to increase. So it depends on how you feel re that part of the flavor profile.

Happy Birthday!

Dale
