Looking for specific Vegas Pinot Gris

Wife and I were out in Vegas last week for our annual "donation" trip and we are trying to remember the name of the fabulous Pinot Gris that we had with our smoked salmon at the Paris hotel. We were dining at Mon Ami Gabi and I called them up to ask the name of the wine and was told that it was a 2004 Tokay Pinot Gris. Well I was all excited because I thought I had the answer to my question. Well it turns out, as you all probably know already, that the Tokay is not the brand name but rather a Hungarian designation. Dead end. Anyway, any of you been to Mon Ami Gabi in Vagas and if so could someone help us find the name of this wonderful wine? Thanks

Why don't you try calling them again and asking someone to read the label to you? What you probably got was someone who didn't know much about wine reading a bit from the wine list.

If you call at an odd hour, not during regular meal-time, they'll probably be less busy and more likely to help.

It was probably not Hungarian, but an Alsace (France) pinot gris. In Alsace, pinot gris is (or was until recently) called Tokay. Hungarian Tokay (also spelled Tokaji) is totally different and is not made from pinot gris.

and ask there. A lot of the folk, who populate that forum live in, and travel to, LV often. Mon Ami Gabi is a very popular venue there, and someone should know the wine list, or can check it out on their next visit.

Good luck - I've been in the same spot before and it's often not as easy as a phone call to the sommelier!

Google is your friend!

Tokay Pinot Gris,"Reserve", Trimbach, "98...42.00

Trimbach is a well known producer, though you may have to look around a bit for a '98.

Actually, Tokay is the traditional name for Pinot Gris (same grape as Pinot Grigio) in the Alsace. confusion with the famous Hungarian wine has caused a shift in nomenclature, for the better.

Your best bet is still to call and ask someone to read from the bottle. Wine lists, especially those posted by a restaurant on its website and rarely updated, are not always accurate-- especially as to the vintage year.

But if they won't read from the bottle (because it requires actually getting one and bringing it to the phone and then returning it to the 'fridge or cellar) I have had good luck simply asking them to fax me their wine list. It's a request rarely declined.
